On a September 2025 cruise up the Norwegian coast, we visited Skagen, Denmark. After touring the excellent museum there, we stopped in a pastry shop across the street. We commented to the very nice and competent young man who was serving us that it was interesting and fun to actually have a danish in Denmark. He didn’t understand. We explained that in California, sweet pastries like the one we had are called “danishes.” He did not know that and said with a big smile that now when Americans come in and ask for a “danish” he would know what they meant!
[Note from the editor: Danes refer to them as 'wienebrød' which translates as 'Vienna bread'.]
