A few years ago, my husband, Bernard, and I spent time in Germany along the Mosel River when the grapes were ripening. We had great memories of that trip so decided to visit there again. We flew into Amsterdam in September 2014, rented a car at the airport and headed off.

On the Internet, I had found the Mosel-Landhaus Hotel Oster (Moselweinstrasse 61-63, 56814 Ediger-Eller, Germany; phone +49 0 26 75 232, www.hotel-oster.de). We stayed two nights and paid 72 (near $81) per night for both of us. The staff was very friendly.

Our room, located on the third floor at the rear of the building, was huge and inviting, with a small desk area and a bathroom. The balcony was as large as the room! TV and Wi-Fi were provided.

Even if you don’t stay at the hotel, there’s an indoor restaurant that includes outdoor seating. The food was excellent,

The buffet breakfast cost 8 ($9) per person and was very fulfilling. Our light lunch cost 13.90 for two and the dinner special, 10.50 each. A large beer cost 2.80 and a small one, 2.30.

Motorcycle and bicycle garages were available at the hotel, and street parking was free.

There was bus service to nearby towns, and along the river were bicycle paths. We took a walk along the river, ventured to nearby villages and took a short cruise on the Mosel to learn some of the area’s history.
