The Department of State warns travelers that Al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), a terrorist group, continues its attempts to kidnap Westerners in Niger.

On Jan. 7, two French nationals were kidnapped in the capital and found dead the next day following a rescue attempt by military forces. Seven people kidnapped by AQIM from the northern mining town of Arlit in September 2010 are still being held hostage.
