Añejo Limon in Puerto Vallarta

My husband and a friend and I spent a week at a resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, March 2-9, 2017. Although we usually cooked for ourselves in our villa, we sometimes caught ourselves in town at lunchtime.

One day, we decided to eat at a new restaurant we had spotted, Añejo Limon Restaurante (Calle Basilio Badillo 229, Puerto Vallarta; phone +52 322 222 1110, anejolimon@gmail.com). It looked like it was open, so we went in.

It turned out the owner had planned to open that day but didn’t feel they were ready yet. Nevertheless, he pulled us inside to try the truffled scrambled eggs he had just created and give him our opinions. The eggs were fluffy and very flavorful, and we promised to return.

When we returned two days later, the waiter ushered us into the open courtyard dining area, which was surrounded by high stone walls with flowering vines crawling up them. Tables for four were dressed in colorful cloth table linens. The whole scene was a restful, quiet refuge from the busy street outside.

The food we ordered was cooked perfectly and served in timely fashion. My husband’s fruit salad was fresh and beautifully presented. Our friend’s huevos divorciados (“divorced eggs,” one covered with red sauce and the other with green sauce) were pretty, with full flavor. My dish of mushrooms and artichoke over toast was yummy and very filling.

While we were waiting for our meals, the owner popped out with a fresh croissant for each of us. He had whipped these up using a heart-stopping but wonderful amount of real butter. They were such a treat!

The entire bill came to around $20, but I can’t recall exactly.

My husband and I plan to return to Puerto Vallarta — and Añejo Limon — in November.
