My husband, Mike, and I stayed in Brittany at Gîte Lapin Kerguedalen (Kerguedalen, 56160 Ploërdut, Bretagne, France; phone +33 [0] 297394228). During planning, e-mails were answered promptly, and the owners accepted PayPal, which makes things easier. We paid €400 (near $510) for eight nights, Sept. 23-30, 2012, and were sent detailed directions to find the property.

This place was fantastic! The owners, Inge and Remco, were a joy. They live on the property and were always available but not intrusive. Inge welcomed us with a bottle of wine plus fresh eggs from her hens, then explained everything in the apartment.

They have put lots of love into restoring the buildings and it showed. Spotlessly clean, the gîte was beautifully decorated with high-quality furnishings. Open to the sitting area, the kitchen was well equipped and had plenty of counter space, a large refrigerator and a dining table that could seat six.

The sofa and chairs were so comfortable! There was a big-screen TV, DVD, etc., and plenty of reading material. The WiFi worked just fine. There was a toilet on the main level plus a nice-sized washer, and we had plenty of hot water. The steps were easy to navigate to the two bedrooms upstairs, both with new and modern baths. Both bedrooms and bathrooms had skylights.

Inge has done wonderful things with the landscaping. It was so much fun just to walk around and admire the plants. There was even a hiking trail across the property. The patio, with a table and chairs, was a great place to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There were renters in the other building, but we hardly knew they were there.

There were nice grocery stores in both Rostrenen and Guéméne-sur-Scorff, each a 10- to 15-minute drive away.

Each day, I looked forward to returning to feed the chickens and rabbits and play with the two adorable cats.
