Non-US-centric travel search sites

ITN printed the following queries from Susan Jerrick of Portland, Oregon: “I spent 2½ useless hours on the phone with one of the best known of the Web search sites (e.g., Kayak, Travelocity, Expedia, etc.). This made me stop and think, ‘What search sites do NOT favor American airlines but give foreign carriers equal billing with domestic airlines for flights anywhere in the world?

Favorite vendors abroad

A rare-book dealer? A talented tailor? A source of coffee beans? ITN asked you to tell us about your favorite vendor outside of the US. Along with the details, we wanted to know the shop’s location or contact info and when you last made a purchase there. A number of subscribers wrote in.

We never visit London without stopping at John Sandoe [Books], Ltd. (10 Blacklands Terrace, Chelsea, London, England, SW3 2SR, U.K.; phone 020 7589 9473). It’s an easy walk from the Sloan Square Tube station.

Memorabilia

What do YOU collect on trips overseas? That’s what we asked readers to write in about. We printed some of the responses in last month’s issue, and here are a few more. Have something to add? Write to Memorabilia, c/o ITN, 2116 28th St., Sacramento, CA 95818, or e-mail editor@intltravelnews.com (please include your surface-mail address).

Memorabilia

What do YOU collect on trips overseas? What got you started? Have you derived any special benefits or had any interesting experiences due to your searches? Do you have any tips for others on a similar quest?

Those were the questions we put to you a few months ago, and below are some of the replies. We’ll have more in next month’s issue. One interesting development — we expected that most travelers would be going after a small number of collectibles, but, except for one theme, the items named are surprisingly diverse.

Favorite special-interest museums

ITN asked you to name your favorite museum, but not one of the usual, obvious choices like The British Museum or the Louvre; we wanted to hear about your favorite “special interest” museum — the exhibit or collection that really hit a nerve or sparked your imagination, someplace like the Ferrari Museum in Modena, Italy, or the Resistance Museum in Copenhagen. Below are some readers’ selections.

If you have one to suggest, write to My Favorite Museum, c/o ITN, 2116 28th St., Sacramento, CA 95818, or e-mail editor@intltravelnews.com (please include your surface-mail address).

A digital camera you can recommend — Compact Cameras

We asked for your recommendation of a good, pocket-sized, point-and-shoot digital camera that has a viewfinder. But we also asked you to name the digital camera — of any type — that you prefer to use while on a trip. In last month’s issue we printed subscribers’ comments on “ultracompact” cameras (about the size of a deck of cards and weighing less than six ounces without batteries).

Flower Fests or Displays

We asked you to tell us about an annual event that you recently attended, outside of the US, involving flowers — a flower festival, a parade, an exhibition of flowers, a special bloom time, etc. Following are replies received.

Seeing the invitation for comments on flower fests, Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, THE NETHERLANDS, immediately came to mind. Keukenhof is the world’s largest flower garden, showcasing seven million of the bulbs that make Holland famous.

We asked for your recommendation of a good, pocket-sized, point-and-shoot digital camera that has a viewfinder. But we also asked you to name the digital camera — of any type — that you prefer to use while on a trip. The response was impressive, so in this issue we’re printing subscribers’ comments just on “ultracompact” cameras (about the size of a deck of cards and, in most cases, weighing less than six ounces without batteries).
