A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island, Indonesia, on Aug. 15, killing at least 111 people and injuring more than 1,678 others, 336 of them seriously. The quake, centered about 42 miles north-northwest of Ende at a depth of 10 kilometers, triggered a tsunami of up to 5.3 feet that struck 10 locations across East Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi provinces.
More than 185,000 people were displaced, and nearly 78,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. Almost 567,000 people lost power, and more than 800 cellular sites were knocked out, hampering rescue efforts. Nearly 8,800 aftershocks were recorded in the days that followed, including one of magnitude 6.1.
