In Nancy, France, two walking audio tours, in English, can be taken using a handheld device rented from the Office de Tourisme (Place Stanislas, 54063 Nancy, France; phone +33 3 83 35 80 10, www.nancy-tourisme.fr/en). Whether it’s the tour of the UNESCO-recognized Old Town or of the city’s Art Nouveau history, it can take two to four hours, depending on pace.

Along with a free city map, audio devices can be rented 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Tues.-Sun. and 1:30-6:30 p.m. Mon. Cost is 8 (near $9.70) per person or free with a Nancy City Pass. (A 24-, 48- or 72-hour Nancy City Pass costs 19, 29 or 34 per person, respectively, and offers free entry to Nancy-area museums, free public transport and discounts at shops and restaurants.)
