Concert hall in Berlin

This item appears on page 12 of the May 2017 issue.

Berlin’s newest concert hall, the 682-seat Pierre Boulez Saal, designed by architect Frank Gehry and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, opened in March. Housed in the former storage building for the sets of the Staatsoper, the hall, with seats surrounding the stage, provides a venue for young musicians from Israel and the Middle East.

The inaugural season, through July 3, focuses on works of Schubert. Tickets for a number of performances run 15-55 (near $16-$59) and can be purchased online (boulezsaal.de), by phone (+49 [0] 30 47 99 74 11) or at the box office (Barenboim-Said Akademie, Französische Straße 33D, Berlin), which is open only two hours before any show.

A guided one-hour tour of the hall and the neighboring music academy costs 10 per person.
