Accessible Jerusalem

This item appears on page 4 of the April 2014 issue.

For mobility-impaired visitors to Jerusalem’s Old City, a brochure on self-guided tours is available from the Israel Ministry of Tourism.

The tours are titled “From Jaffa Gate to Zion Gate,” “The Jewish Quarter,” “The Temple Mount Compound,” “The Via Dolorosa” and “Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period.” The tours cover five to ten points of interest each and can be completed in a few hours, depending on pace.

For each route, there is information on what is suitable for slow walkers or those in wheelchairs and which sites need to be contacted in advance for wheelchair access. The included map shows locations of accessible bathrooms. The brochures are free in the tourism office by the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City and at www.goisrael.com.
