My wife and I parlayed our SkyMiles into a trip to France and would like to recommend a few chambres d’hôtes which provided good accommodation and real contact with the local people.

• From Paris we drove to the south coast of Brittany, where we stayed in the small town of Kerjean at one of the nine Gîtes de Kerjean (Kerjean F-29910 Tregunc, France; phone +33 [0] 2 98 97 36 76); the host was Christophe Cardon.

We highly recommend these fully equipped chambres. For the two of us, five nights (Sept. 14-19, 2011) cost €260 (near $350).

• In the picturesque town of Perros-Guirec on the north coast of Brittany, we found Au Point de Vue (60 bd. Clémenceau, 22700 Perros-Guirec, France; phone 02 96 14 04 07). The hosts were most welcoming; Bernard is French but worked in England for a long time, and his wife, Sabina, is English.

During our stay there, Sept. 19, we had a very comfortable room (€55, or $74) plus afternoon tea and a sumptuous breakfast. The view was fantastic. The town, a seaside resort, is quite close by and has many restaurants.

• Wanting to visit Giverny and Rouen, we found an excellent lodging midway between the two, in Acquigny.

La Roseraie (Quartier Saint-Mauxe, 27400 Acquigny, France; phone 02 32 50 20 10 or e-mail heullant@wanadoo.fr), owned by Michelle Heullant, has five rooms. We had one, complete with a refrigerator and cooking facilities, in a detached building. The setting was wonderfully rural. We stayed there Sept. 24-25 for €45 ($60) per night.

• We needed to be at Charles de Gaulle Airport for an early flight and found it relatively easy to manage by staying at Hotel Campanile (Zone d’Activites du Parc de Roissy-Allee, Des Vergers, 95700 Roissy, France; phone +33 1 34 29 80 40).

This is very much a transit hotel, but every 20 minutes it offers a free 15-minute shuttle ride from the front door to the airport. Not all hotels in the area have this service, and many require making one’s way to a pickup point.

The hotel, with a restaurant, was quite comfortable and can be reserved via Delta Air Lines. We stayed there Sept. 27 for €53.
