The Eritrean government con- tinues to require foreign nationals to apply for permission to travel outside the Asmara city limits. The Eritrean government does not inform the US Embassy when US citizens have been arrested.

The US Department of State strongly advises avoiding travel near the Eritrean-Ethiopian border and the southern Red Sea region, including the port of Assab, due to military tensions. Ships and sail- ing vessels are strongly advised not to attempt to dock in Eritrean ports or travel through Eritrean waters.
