‘Iceman’ on view

Over 5,000 years ago, a man climbed up to the Schnalstal glacier in what is now Italy’s Dolomites and died. He was found by two hikers in 1991, with his clothes and equipment, mummified and frozen. Since March 1998, the “Iceman” has been on exhibit at the Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano.

The exhibit is structured chronologically, documenting the entire history of Alto Adige/Suedtirol from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Age (15000 B.C.) to the Carolingian period (around A.D. 800). Models, reconstructions, videos and interactive multimedia stations allow visitors to gain insight into the past.

Like most museums in Europe, the Museum of Archaeology is closed on Mondays as well as on the following holidays: Jan. 1, May 1 and Dec. 25. For info, visit www.iceman.it. For info on museums and events in Italy, visit www.italiantourism.com.
