My husband, David, and I have stayed 12 times at Hotel de la Paix (Bernastrasse 24, 3800 Interlaken, SWITZERLAND; phone +41 33 822 70 44, fax 822 87 28 or visit www. hotel-de-la-paix.ch), most recently in August ’06.

This charming and intimate hotel, located in a residential street only three minutes’ walk from the West Station, is owned and operated by George and Gillian Etterli. The friendly hosts keep the hotel in immaculate condition, and many guests return year after year to experience the gracious hospitality and relaxing atmosphere of this lovely property away from the busy...

If you plan to spend time in Inverness, we re commend Dunhallin House (164 Culduthel Rd., Inverness, SCOTLAND, IV4BH, U.K.; phone 44 1463 220824 or visit http://dunhallin.co.uk) — located on a quiet street about 1½ miles from the central district.

Over the past 27 years we’ve stayed at many dozens of B&Bs in the British Isles and none can compare with Dunhallin House. The house itself is only 11 years old. Margaret and Sandy Murray have been offering bed-and-breakfast for only 1½ years. In addition to the Murrays’ cordiality, Margaret serves the finest British...

My old haunt in Paris is Hôtel Esméralda (4 rue St. Julien-le-Pauvre 5e, Paris, 75005, France; phone 33-1-43-54-19-20). Its location on the Left Bank just across from Notre Dame is ideal, but the hotel has gone downhill over the years.

On my visit in June ’07, Room 12 had torn wallpaper and the toilet seat was not working well. Worst, the room smelled of mold, to which I am extremely allergic. However much I regret it, I can’t stay there the next time I am in Paris.

If you don’t have mold allergies, it is a delightful old place, built in the 17th century. The “good” rooms are...

If you’re looking for peace on Earth, consider the Casa Del Mar (Jalan Pantai Cenang, Mukim Kedawang, Langkawi 07000, Kedah Darul Aman, MALAYSIA; phone [60] [4] 955 2388, fax 955 2228, www.casadelmar-langkawi).

This modest, 2-story hotel (about 30 rooms) appears unassuming at first from the street. We found it by accident when walking along Cenang Beach on the island of Langkawi (northwestern Malaysia).

The terra-cotta building conveys a simple elegance, from the small, Mediterranean lobby to the panoramic view of the Andaman Sea. In February ’07 we paid $200 per night for...

My two girlfriends and I took a 2-week independent trip to Italy, June 7-21, 2006. We always plan our trips ourselves (no packages), customizing them for what we want to see and leaving plenty of free time in between the sightseeing for cafés, hiking, etc.

This trip included Venice (plus Murano, Burano and Torcello islands), our hiking the entire Cinque Terre trail, Florence (with a stop to tour Pisa en route) and Rome.

In the Cinque Terre, five villages on the Ligurian Sea linked by wonderful trails, we stayed in a B&B called Ca’ d’ Andrean (visit www.cadandrean.it)....

Visitors to Amsterdam with a sense of humor might like the Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam (Oostelijke Handelskade 34, 1019 BN Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS; phone +31 [0] 20 561 3636, fax 3600 or visit www.lloydhotel.com).

Located on the docks in the eastern part of the city, the hotel was built in the early 20th century by the Lloyd shipping line as housing for emigrants who were about to embark for the New World. During the Nazi occupation it was used as a prison, then later as a juvenile prison, then abandoned for a time before being completely renovated and made into a hotel again.

My wife and I always try to rent an apartment for a stay longer than a few days in major cities. We were not doing well for our recent trip to Athens, GREECE, June 8-14, 2007, until we found a one-bedroom flat on the Internet.

Kodrou Plaka (Kodrou St. 5, Plaka, Athens; phone owner Stefan Järhad at 011 32 479 414 910 or visit www.yourstayandtravel.com) is in an excellent location. It was an easy walk (with our roller suitcases) from the Syntagmatos Square metro station — no small matter for us, what with the poor reputation of Athens’ taxi drivers!

In somewhat of an older...

Hotel Elun (Camino a Punta Larga KM 02, Frutillar, CHILE; phone/fax +56 [65] 420055 or 420170, cell 09 346 7035, www.hotelelun.cl).

This was one of the best hotels we found during our month-long trip to Chile in March ’08.

The hotel is modern and well maintained, with a very pleasant staff. There’s a view of Lake Llanquihue and Osorno Volcano.

Rooms with facilities en suite plus twin beds run $70-$120 (breakfast included), depending on the season.
