On the edge of the city of Iquitos, Peru, is the floating city of Belen.

I took a delightful 2-week trip to Peru with Amazonia Expeditions (10305 Riverburn Dr., Tampa, FL 33647; phone 800/262-9669) in March ’04, staying at the Tahuayo Lodge. The cost, including airfare from Denver, one night in Lima, transfers and meals, was $2,795 plus $37 Peruvian taxes.

I arrived at the lodge after a 4-hour trip upriver from Iquitos, the last large city on the river, some 2,500 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. When we docked in front of the lodge, I began to question the wisdom of my choice, as it appeared to be a ramshackle collection of palm-thatched wooden buildings...

My friend Susan Carrasco and I spent two weeks on Palawan Island in the Philippines in April ’08. We stayed in the lovely, new Balay Inato Pension (294 Manalo St., Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines 5300; phone 048 433 8595, mobile 0926 617 2007 or e-mail balayinato_pension@yahoo.com.ph), which is in a safe location not far from the airport. Free airport transfers are offered and there’s parking on site.

I recommend this pension highly. Rooms each have air-conditioning, cable TV and a bath with hot-water shower. There are only 14 rooms, so reservations are a necessity.

The Pacific International Hotel (43 Esplanade, Cairns, Queensland, Australia; phone +61 7 4051 7888, fax 4031 1445, www.pacifichotelcairns.com) was recommended by a fellow traveler who visits Cairns each year for diving and stays at this hotel. It’s within walking distance of the Esplanade, the night market, the harbor and the shopping and tourist areas.

The Standard and Executive rooms are just fine (I think “executive” is the same size as “standard” but on a higher floor), but the true value are the Deluxe rooms — large corner rooms with wraparound balconies and great views of the...

My friend, Virginia, and I spent five days at Well Cottage Bed & Breakfast (Ewen, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 6BU, UNITED KINGDOM; phone 01 285 770212, mobile 0 7850 328447, www.well cottagebandb.co.uk) in October ’08, and we must have picked the gold-medal winner of English B&Bs!

Well Cottage is a beautiful, old stone farmhouse in the pretty little community of Ewen. The interior has been extensively remodeled.

Our twin-bedded room (£60 [$86] per night for a double or £50, single) was spacious and handsomely furnished with a fabulous bathroom, white and...

It was midnight when my husband, Skip, and son, George, and I checked into the Best Western Premier Foresta Hotel (Herserudsvaegen 22, Box 1324, Lidingö, SE-18125, SWEDEN; phone +46 [0] 8 50550500, fax 550 590, www.bestwestern.com).

The front desk manager Marcus Jonnson welcomed us with kindness and good cheer. Four days later, he checked us out with sandwiches and coffee at 6:30 a.m.; the buffet was not yet open and he wanted us to have something to eat before we started our travel home to the USA. He was hospitality made manifest.

For our stay in July ’08 I had booked a 3-...

While our experience of small hotels, especially in Provence, is that great hospitality is a given, we received the ultimate in helpfulness at Au Saint Roch Hotel et Jardin (9 rue Paul Mérindol, 84000 Avignon, FRANCE; phone +33 [0] 4 90 16 50 00, fax 90 82 78 30, www.hotelstroch-avignon.com). My husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law were traveling together in May ’08.

The St. Roch is a fine choice if you want something with a bit of atmosphere. Located just outside the walls of Avignon and a short walk from the main sights, restaurants and shops, the hotel has 27 rooms (with...

This B&B has five rooms of different sizes. Ours, set well back of a relatively busy street, had a balcony and overlooked a swimming pool and a beautiful, large garden full of lemon trees....
