Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 497th issue of your monthly foreign-travel magazine.

Before I get into the latest news and all, I want to remind you about the helpful new addition that we made to our website, which I told you about last month.

If you are an ITN subscriber who feels you have had a travel insurance claim improperly denied, you can apply to have a claims adjuster from the online travel insurance broker Squaremouth (www.squaremouth.com) investigate your claim and possibly mediate on your behalf — for free...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 496th issue of your monthly foreign-travel magazine. (Approaching 500! We must be doing something right.)

I’ve got a lot to cover this month, so I’ll get right to it.

Starting sometime in late February, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) quietly changed the way its agents perform pat-downs in airport security lines.

Previously, screeners had the option to decide how rigorously to pat down each traveler, based on their own assessment of the passenger...

(First of two parts)

The need for a dose of relaxation following a heavy work schedule resulted in a March 2017, 6-night visit to the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, comprising Sint Maarten (Dutch) and Saint-Martin (French).

It had been well over a decade since my wife, Gail, and I had visited the island, and much development had occurred, especially on the Dutch side. In terms of size, the French portion of St. Martin is 21 square miles and the Dutch, 16.

The island’s precolonial inhabitants were the Arawak, who migrated from northern South...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 495th issue of your monthly foreign-travel magazine.

If this is the first time you’ve held a copy of International Travel News (ITN), I hope you like what you see: candid reports on tours, hotels, airlines and destinations written by our subscribers, people with a love for travel.

In ITN, we print no news or information about places in the United States. However, we cover everywhere ELSE, and we’ve been around — circling the globe — since 1976!

The people who read...

(Third of three parts)

On the final part of the 12-day tour of Scandinavia that I took with smarTours (partially hosted) in August 2015, our group enjoyed an overnight DFDS Seaways cruise from Oslo, Norway, to Copenhagen, exploring the Danish capital for two days before flying to Helsinki, Finland. Boarding the ship in Oslo in late afternoon, we enjoyed two sunny hours of revelry on the 11th-level open deck with a view of the city skyline and harbor. The cruise was off to a great start and we hadn’t yet left the dock. Smooth sailing within sight of the coast for most of the...

 (Second of three parts)

The second stage of my August 2015 Scandinavian adventure began with a drive from coastal Bergen into the heart of Norway’s enthralling fjord region. I was journeying, partially hosted, with a group of 38 intrepid travelers on the 12-day “Scandinavian Explorer” tour offered by smarTours (New York, NY; 800/337-7773 or 212/297-0955, www.smartours.com).

Upon our arrival at the hamlet of Voss, we boarded an express train for the climb to Myrdal Station, where we switched over to the Flåm Railway.

For the next...

Dear Globetrotter:

Welcome to the 488th issue of your monthly foreign-travel magazine.

This publication continues to prosper because of the travelers who subscribe to it (thank you) and the companies that advertise in it (thank them).

If you’re thinking of visiting a particular destination, consider the offerings of one of the tour operators who are providing support to ITN… and let them know where you saw their ad. They’ll appreciate the feedback.

The polling company Gallup (www.gallup.com) compiles a “Law and Order...
