A trip to the “Stans” and Iran with Road Scholar in fall 2015 necessitated several border crossings, where group members had to portage our own luggage on foot, exiting through one country’s Immigration station and walking a couple of hundred yards to the next country’s entrance. This was not an easy task, since we were outside in cold weather and on poor walkways.

When we arrived at the Uzbekistan/Tajikistan border, we approached the Immigration officer one at a time. Uzbekistan...

Eight years ago, my husband and I visited the country of Jordan, where a highlight of our trip was a day spent touring the site of Petra.

Checking into our hotel that evening, we found that, despite the cool weather, our room was stiflingly warm. I fiddled with the thermostat on the wall, but only hot air came out of the vent. Eventually, I gave up and phoned the front desk.

I wasn’t quite sure the clerk clearly understood our situation, but he sent someone up to fix the problem....

While visiting Havana in January 2016, my wife and I hired driver/guide Alain Galvez (alain.galvez@nauta.cu) for a personalized tour in his 1957 Buick convertible.

The car was not one of the pristine restorations you see in Cuba, but Alain was very proud that the original V8 engine was still purring (OK, it was sort of a roar) and that the car had belonged to his father. Most of the 1950s cars there now have Russian or Chinese diesel engines and emit clouds of smoke.

Getting in the car, I...

This month’s winner is DONALD A. CESARIO of Oro Valley, AZ:

Last year on a visit to South Korea, where I was staying with American friends who had been living there for a few years, I was introduced to one of their female friends, whose first name was Shin.

On the assumption that I might meet her again, I made an attempt to remember her name by making a mnemonic association.

Sure enough, the following week we were again in each other’s company, and in my eagerness to please her by remembering her name, I blurted out, “Hello, Knee.”

Dining at the fabulous Le Train Bleu at the Gare de Lyon station in Paris was on our bucket list for fall 2015. Since our TGV train would arrive at the rail station at 1:30 p.m., my husband and I had made lunch reservations.

In the station, since we had our luggage with us (a roller suitcase and a tote each), we asked for directions to the elevator up. We knew the restaurant had a special cloakroom just for luggage storage.

“Out the main train station outside entrance and to the right,”...

This month’s winner is ROSEMARY McDANIEL of Trenton, Florida:

On my first trip to Madeira, Portugal, in 2014, I changed planes in Lisbon for my 1½-hour flight to Funchal, Madeira. I was to be met by a private driver who would drive me to my apartment, so, upon deplaning and going through Immigration, I went outside and looked for someone holding a sign with my name on it.

After waiting an hour and not seeing my driver, I decided to hire a taxi. I gave the driver the address of the apartment, but he was unable to find it when he entered it into his GPS. He kept...

In May 2016, my wife, Susie, and I — along with 24 people from all around the world — were taking a tour of China prior to attending a World Federation of Rose Societies convention being held there.

In Kunming, Yunnan, near the lake, I noticed two female botanist friends of ours from Japan in deep discussion, so I asked what they were discussing.

They told me they were trying to identify a species of Pinus that was not indigenous to the area.

I looked at the tree, did the...

This month’s winner is JERRY BOUGHTON of Shreveport, Louisiana:

A few years ago, my wife and I took a trip to Paris with some friends. After arriving at Orly Airport, we collected our bags, exited and got a taxi. As the driver loaded our luggage, I sat in the front seat.

During some years of being stationed in France and a number of visits since then, I had learned a few basic French sentences, so, wanting to impress my friends, when the driver got in, I cheerfully said, in my best French, “Comment allez-vous?” which means, “How are you?”
