Buenos Aires

We will be in Buenos Aires in February. Any suggestions for a hotel and/or day trip guide? Lana

Back in 2008, while en route to Antarctica, we stayed several nights at the 725 Buenos Aires, AV. Roque Saenz Pena 725, and found the hotel to centrally located, comfortable and with helpful staff. www.725continental.com The hotel was within easy walking distance of Calle Florida, the city's pedestrian street and, with a bit more effort, Plaza de Mayo, Recoleta Cemetery, Plaza San Martin, and Colon Theater.

As I look at old trip notes, we found the small upstairs museum in the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar, located beside Recoleta Cemetery, offered an outstanding overlook of the cemetery.

Be sure to stop for hot chocolate with churros at Gran Café Tortoni (825 Av de Mayo, www.cafetortoni.com.ar), probably the oldest café in Buenos Aires. This elegant café boasted Tiffany glass ceilings, tuxedo clad waiters, and rich ambiance.

For tango, we attended the superb Carlos Gardel Tango Show which had been recommended by other ITN readers. www.esquinacarlosgardel.com.ar

Enjoy your visit!

Last fall I stayed very comfortably at the Duque, on the edge of the Palermo district, at a prepaid rate. I see it is still very highly rated on TA, and I agree with the rating, for both the hotel and the staff.

My first full day I took a mini-bus tour booked through the hotel. I also spent a morning with a volunteer guide, arranged through http://cicerones.org.ar/index.php - although the website is in Spanish, my guide spoke very good English. On my last day I spent the afternoon admiring street art on a tour with this outfit: http://graffitimundo.com/

Unfortunately, Buenos Aires is not the safest city around. I was hit with the "black water" (actually yellow goo) scam on the metro (nothing was stolen), as were friends of mine a week earlier on the Avenue de Libertade. I also met a woman who had her shoulder bag and neck wallet stolen just outside Recoleta cemetery. Wear a money belt and stay alert.

If you need a guide/driver you can contact Pablo Menendez who runs a taxi service for airport transfers, trips to estancias, the Tigre (Delta Area) and other day trips from Buenos Aires. His email is: pablo336menendez@hotmail.com
and tel: 15-5854-4625 or from US 011-54-911-5854-4625
He is friendly, speaks English well and knows the city like the back of his hand. In Tigre, he walked me thru the market and we didn’t miss a section (I would have gotten lost if by myself); then visited the port area to see the water-taxis with their roofs covered with boxes, luggage and even dogs being transported to the islands. I didn’t have time to take a trip to the islands (about 2 hours ) but it looked worthwhile. After this day trip, he dropped me off at the airport for my evening flight back to the US.

We stayed in this hotel in 2010, used by many cruise lines (I made our own arrangements thru their website).  Very close to Calle Florida.During the 2 times we've been to BA, we had 3 excellent dining experiece at Puerto Moderno -- can't remember names unfortunately.  Not cheap but great service and food.  As stated by another writer, be aware of pickpockets and scams where dirty "water" is thrown at you and another person tries to be helpful and gets into your pockets.  This happened to my husband, but they didn't get much, maybe $25.  I knew something was happening and slapped her hands away -- she couldn't get into my stuff as I had a jacket wrapped around my waist -- too cumbersome. The opera house which reopened in 2010 after many years refurbishment, offers approx. 1 hr tours in English  -- have your hotel check for times.  Excellent.  Would have loved to attend a performance but didn't  have time.

Having tried hard to contact pablo336menendez@hotmail.com but there was no luck of any responses. Is this address still in use?
