From Minori, ITALY, May 27, ’04. . .

• Hotel Villa Romana (Corso Vittorio Emanuele 90, Minori) — on the Amalfi Coast. We were traveling with another couple and stayed two nights here at approximately $165 per night with an EP food plan.

Our traveling partners had the sewer overflow and fill their bathroom upon taking a bath. Later that night we had bathrooms overflow and flood also. We were moved to another room where the air-conditioner did not work. We were moved twice more because there was no hot water in one room and, in the next, it took two people to open the door out...

On GREECE, June ’04. . .

• Vitro Greek Taverna (27, Makrigiani St., Athens, Greece; phone 30 210/923 8124) — a pleasant neighborhood restaurant with sidewalk seating when the weather is good.

The food was tasty and relatively inexpensive (for Greece, where it’s fairly expensive). Not a large menu, but it offers traditional Greek food. Also a small, fixed-price menu at about €10-€12 for a main course; the à la carte prices are higher. Live music from about 7:45 p.m.

• Loukoulos Mediterranean Tastes (Korai 5, Iraklion, Crete, Greece; phone 2810/224 435).

REPORT ON JORDAN… For our November-December 2011 trip to Jordan, we hired a private driver, Jehad Abu Saeed, whom we highly recommend. Jehad was courteous and a good driver and had a clean and comfortable car. He showed up on time and was always waiting by the car when we finished touring a site. When we wanted to adjust our plans for the day, he was happy to oblige. He is not a guide and will not accompany you into the various sites, but, typically, there were guides available for hire at most of the sites we visited. For an airport pickup and dropoff and six days of touring, we paid...

REPORT ON BANGKOK…

Four friends and I went to lunch in Bangkok at the Paris Bangkok Restaurant (120 Soi Saladang 1/1, Silom Bangrak 10500, Bangkok, Thailand; phone 02 233 1990) on Dec. 16, 2011, and the food there was exceptional.

I ordered a set menu consisting of a duck foie gras appetizer and steak entrée, and the others had entrées of salmon, tuna and chicken Basquaise plus dessert and two bottles of St. Christopher wine.

One friend said his salmon was the best he’d ever had. He said the same for his dessert of chocolate cake with hot chocolate filling and...

On MALAYSIA & SINGAPORE, February-March ’09. . .

• On flights between Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, Feb. 25 and March 4, I was very favorably impressed with Malaysia Airlines’ business class, which, at $4,100, cost much less than other airlines’ business-class seats (low of $6,600).

The planes were squeaky clean; the bathrooms were cleaned every hour! Up in the “hump” of the 747, it was quiet and I slept quite well; the seats reclined to nearly flat. The food was mostly Asian and very, very good.

The flight attendants were pleasant and extremely...

From VERNAZZA, Italy, May 19, 2009…

My travel companion, Cindy, and I traveled to Italy, May 5-19, and discovered II Pirata delle Cinque Terre (Via G Guidoni, 36, Vernazza, Italy; phone 0187 812047). It’s located near the bus stop and parking area at the top of Vernazza, one of the Cinque Terre villages.

Sicilians Gianluca and Massimo (twins) run this unique Italian restaurant. In the off-season, they live on an island near Sicily and teach culinary classes, but from March to September they bring a touch of Sicily to this region.

Gianluca is a pastry chef artist and,...

From BADEN-BADEN, Germany, July 15, 2009. . .

• Hotel Colmar (Lange Strasse 34, D-76530, Baden-Baden, Germany; phone 07221/93 89 0, fax 93 89 50, www.hotel-colmar.de) — located in central Baden, on the pedestrian zone.

This is a fine and friendly hotel, written about by Mr. Rick Steves, himself, as a good place to stay in Baden. However, the Colmar is the loudest hotel I have ever stayed at — period.

We last stayed here in 2000. We booked our room online, and the hotel once again offered us three nights’ stay (July 12-15) in a great central location, with a kind staff...

From FRANKFURT, Germany, July 18, 2009…

• Albatros Airport Hotel (Nordendstr. 12, Morfelden-Walldorf 64546, Germany; phone 011 49 6105 70100, fax 6105 75295 or e-mail info@albatroshotel.de) — a 15-minute ride from the Frankfurt airport.

In my opinion, this is a 2-star hotel, but I would rate it a “good bang for the buck.” Very clean but sparse on amenities. All they give you is liquid soap in the shower and at the bathroom sink.

The hotel is not air-conditioned, so try to stay away from the top floor in the summer. My room did have a fan and a refrigerator.

My...
