Several months before a Celebrity Infinity cruise that would stop in the Falkland Islands, I wrote to the Falkland Islands Tourist Board (www.falklandislands.com) asking for a recommendation of a tour guide who was knowledgeable about birds. They recommended Brian Summers (summerwalks@horizon.co.fk), a local bird expert.

I contacted Brian, and he quickly responded and agreed to take us to places where we were most likely to see penguins and other birds. Brian is a third-generation Falkland Islander and an avid conservationalist, so we found him perfect for our interests.

Brian picked my husband and me and two friends up at the dock on Feb. 14, 2017, and drove us to Gypsy Cove and then to the area near the lighthouse. Before being dropped off at the local museum, we got to see peat being cut for fuel.

He charged us $25 each for our tour of approximately three hours. It was so much more interesting and personal than a shore excursion provided by the cruise line. I highly recommend Brian Summers. He’s wonderful!
