Trip to Milan, Italy

My wife and I will be in Milan (Milano) Italy October/November and would like to visit some of the more interesting towns in Northern Italy; we're looking for suggestions on where to stay (note not 5 star hotels--B & B's or similar are preferred and we want to use two or three cities/towns for a base, and do day trips ) and things to see.

I have a few suggestions based on a trip we took a while back. Our trip was in mid-September a number of years ago. We flew in and out of Milan. The towns we found most interesting were Mantua, Ferraro, Ravenna (which we drove to from Venice) and Verona (we used Vicenza as a base because small hotel prices were much more reasonable than in Verona). We also enjoyed a few days in the Lake Como area. We stayed in Maggiano at a wonderful small hotel called the Hotel Garden. It was very reasonably priced, right on the lake and the views from our room were fantastic. The owners were very helpful and the included breakfast was great. After Como we drove through the Dolomites from Bolzano to Cortina. It is a beautiful drive. Since Cortina is a ski resort there wasn't much to do there in late September but the drive from Balzano was worth the trip.

Acqui Terme is lovely!

You might consider Como (town) for its proximity to Milan and easy access to Lake Como’s villages.

Although Noli is charming, it’s not the most convenient for ease of transport requiring bus service from the train station in Spotorno – Consider Rapallo, Chiavari, Sestri Levante or Levanto along the Riviera di Levante east of Genova.
