New Year's in Vienna

Does anyone have ideas about what to do in Vienna on New Year's Eve? Something that's not too expensive (limit of 200 Euros). We would like music (especially Strauss), and dancing. Dinner would be nice, but not necessary.

I like using the Chowhound forum for foreign city dining questions. Look for the European board and ask your question there and hopefully you can get some good local insights for your vacation. I was there in January a few years back and it was a very damp cold, so dress warmly. Churches are often places for New Years celebrations too, but I found it is not celebrated in Europe the way we celebrate it in the US. Many locals are off in warm condos in the Mediterranean at this time of the year and many restaurants are closed for an extended winter break.

There are numerous concerts venues on New Years Eve in Vienna. This site lists some of them:

Tickets are expensive, but worth it as it will be a lovely evening in a lovely place. You could take your chances and look for tickets upon arrival, but this might prove even more expensive.

Good luck with this!

Thank you Adventuregirl.
Do you think that it's worth it to pay 346 Euros per person for the New Year's Eve Ball at Vienna City Hall?

I was considering doing street parties/food, but from what you say, it might be a wee bit chilly for that.

Street parties are the best way to enjoy this time. I found felt liners in boots with toasty socks, silk underwear, ear muffs/hat, fleece vest, cashmere scarf and gloves along with heavy woolen coat and pants got me through the worst of it in Munich one holiday season and this will do you fine in Vienna most likely as well if you spend time outdoors. Key to winter warmth and easy packing is cashmere and you can get some great deals on ebay if this is not part of your wardrobe where you currently live.
