Moscow Hotel and guide

We will be in Moscow for 2 days following a cruise on the Volga. We are interested in getting the name of a moderately priced hotel. Also would be interested in a guide you could recommend.

In the fall of 2009 we used Dan Petrov (danpetrov74@gmail.com/http://waytomoscow.com/).
Great guy! He picked us up at the (Viking) riverboat dock and we took the subway into downtown. (The poor herd on the boat's tour bus was probably stuck in traffic for an hour or more.)
Many private guides are sort of meat-based audio players. You know; stop at this place and they play the recorded announcement. Next place, next recording.
In contrast, Dan was engaging and flexible. He was also interested in discussing and explaining the country's political and economic issues -- something that we find the most valuable thing about hiring a private guide. This is how we learn about the country.

Try Hotel Garden Ring, it offers rooms with free Wi-Fi, and free parking in central Moscow, just 220 yards from Sukharevskaya Metro. The hotel has spa facilities that are free for guests’ use.

On my trips to Moscow I use as a guide Arthur Lukiyanov. He can be reached at moscowdriver.com ---he's excellent and knows exactly where to go. He'll take you anywhere you want to go and uses a new car as transportation...he'll even pick you up at the airport and take you to your ship when you need to embark. There are several good priced hotels in Moscow, depends on where you want to stay..in any case you won't be on top of Red Square unless you want to pay $500 a night. I stayed at the Hotel Sovietskiy and loved it. It's about 10-15mins from Red Square, the rooms are huge, the food great and there are no tour groups. It's an older hotel, totally refurbished and quite elegant. I really enjoyed my stay there.
