Hotel in Buenos Aires

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel in Buenos Aires that is reasonable (under $200/night) and in a safe and convenient area?

Take a look at the NH Hotels Group (www.nh-hotels.com). This is a Spanish owned chain with eight hotels in Buenos Aires. Two years ago,, I stayed at NH Tango - beautiful room facing Av. 9 de Julio and the oblisk and the buffet breakfast was excellent. It is a block away from the Opera House, Calle Florida and even a tango show. This spring, I'll be at the NH Latino (group hotel for an Eldertreks trip). Watch the website for their 25% off promotions. A good tactic might be to decide what area you want to stay in and look at the NH hotels reviews on trip advisor.

Years ago we stayed at 725 Buenos Aires, AV Roque Saenz Pena 725, www.725 continental.com, and found it centrally located and comfortable, with a helpful staff. We were there with a group so I don't know the rates, but a sports team was there at the same time so I suspect cost is reasonable. My husband and I walked 'everywhere' from the hotel and didn't feel in danger. If you have time while in Buenos Aires, you might want to stop for hot chocolate and churros at Gran Cafe Tortoni (825 Av de Mayo; www.cafetortoni.com.ar) which is an elegant historic cafe with Tiffany glass ceilings, tuxeddo-clad waiters, and rich ambience. If you visit the cemetery where Eva Peron is buried and have time, the adjacent Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar, has a small museum and superb overview of the cemetery. Enjoy your visit!
