Africa Tour Company

A friend and I are planning a tour to West Africa in 2014. We found a company, Continent Tours based in Mali with an office in the US that can arrange a trip for us. To be on the safe side we are asking if anyone has had experience with this company? Thank you.

West Africa is a tricky destination to target because most of the larger operators don't run itineraries there. I just checked all of the operators we have listed and none travel to West Africa. Linblad used to run an expedition ship down the coast of West Africa, but dropped the itinerary (presumably due to low interest). That said, Continent Tours is a decent place to start. You may also want to check out Saga, but Continent is a safer bet.

Scratch that. I missed G Adventures and they're a pretty good operator. They have 3 itineraries that might fit the bill. Sierra Leone, Benin/Burkina Faso/Togo, and a monster 32-day full west african coast itinerary. If any suit you, I'd highly recommend G Adventures.

Eldertreks (out of Toronto, Canada) runs a wonderful trip to Niger, Togo, Benin, and Ghana. It focuses on the Voodoo culture and is truly fascinating. Eldertreks specializes in off the beaten path trips with small groups. We have traveled with them 4 times (including this trip several years ago) and can recommend them.

I did 6 countries in West Africa with Adventures Abrooad in 2006: Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo & Benin . Some long bus days and late arrivals--but not avoidable in that area.
