Santiago Chile

We have an 8 hour layover en route to Patagonia and a 12 hour layover coming home from Ushuaia. Would appreciate suggestions of day guides for Santiago or safe activities in or near the airport. Thank you in advance.

Victor Miranda, an excellent driver in Santiago has helped me twice. The last time was 3 years ago, and I hope his contact information is still current:

Victor is a friendly, trustworthy, licensed remise (private car) driver who does airport transfers as well as tours in and around Santiago. The last time I was in Santiago, I hired him two additional half-days for museum visits and antiques shopping. You might want to do a little research and know what you would like to see. His English is good, but it is helpful if you understand a little Spanish.

And a restaurant recommendation ........ My favorite restaurant in Santiago is El Galeon at the Mercado Central (Central Market) and I’ve has some great meals there over the years. One of their specialties is snow crab from the Straights of Magellan and the other is the “Jardin de Mariscos” -- literally  “Seafood Garden” which is a seafood buffet presented on a huge tray.  The “small” tray is enough for two. There are three branches of the restaurant at the Mercado Central, so if you don’t find a table you like (maybe by the window or upstairs), just walk over to one of the other branches. Be forewarned that when your car comes to a stop, several people will approach you offering menus to their restaurants. Just say “El Galeon” and you will be pointed in the right direction.
