Bogota, Colombia

I am looking for a hotel recommendation in Bogota, Colombia. Would prefer to be near sights, shopping or walking distance from either. Also, is anyone aware of the taxi fare expense from the Bogota Airport to the downtown area? I was quoted a fare of approx. $72.00, which to me seems high. Thank you.

According to the Bogota airport website, the average taxi share is $13, and you can buy a voucher at the airport. See http://www.bogota-airport.com/transportation.html. I haven't been to Bogota so this is all I know about the subject. I suppose it was your hotel that quoted you $72. If so, I'd look for a different hotel. If not, I'd email the hotel and ask if it can arrange your transfer.

I've stayed at Hotel de la Opera in Bogota twice (visits were about a year apart) and enjoyed both stays. It is close to the main square, the Caldelaria district, the museums and the shopping area. The staff is friendly and helpful and included buffet breakfast is excllent. They have rooms in the historic section, which are several colonial buildings put together, but I prefer the rooms in the "tower" -- the severnth floor. They are modern, have great light as they are so high up there are no other buildings obstructing the view. The area is very secure as it is surrounded by government buildings. You can also arrange for a hotel car to pick you up at the airport - cost is about $25.http://www.hotelopera.com.co
