Hotel Napoleon in La Turbie.  Inexpensive. Lovely small town in the hills above Monaco; couple of excellent and reasonable restaurants.

THANKS FOR THE HOTEL TIP  DID YOU HIT A GOOD GUIDE FOR THE AREA OR DIDYOU FIND ANY GREAT MUSEUMS OFF THE REGULAR TOPURIST ROUTS   DAN REGAN

Dan -We have never hired a guide, preferring to research as much as possible in advance and then ask local people for suggestions.  We also rent a car whenever public transportation is limited. There is a lovely small museum at the main site in La Turbie, the Roman "Trophy of the Alps".  http://www.beyond.fr/sites/trophee.html. Despite having little interest in religion, we were fascinated by a pilgrimage location, Notre Dame de Laghet, near LaTurbie.  The hundreds of offerings on display, left in recognition of blessings received, were very moving.  These include many pieces of "naive" art, some very old; they also give good insight into the history of this border area that has seen many masters.  http://www.sanctuaire-laghet.cef.fr/sanctuaire.laghet/Accueil.html is in French, but has lovely photos. www.france-voyage.com is a good source available in English.  http://www.ville-la-turbie.fr/index.php has a lot of info about the area; it is in French, but Google translate does a decent job on entire websites. BTW "A Stretta Corsa" and "La Cave Turbiasque" were our favorite restaurants in La Turbie (tell them the Americans of May 2012 sent you!).  Also, in addition to the Napoleon, there is a fancier hotel/restaurant in town:  Hostellerie Jerome.Mary
