Travelers' Intercom

In my search for a custom tour of the Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka, I began by contacting tour companies, including ITN advertiser Ceylon Express International (Huntington Beach, CA; 800/423-9566, www.ceylonexpress.com), whose owner, Varini De Silva, was head and shoulders above her competitors in response time, advice and satisfying my travel requirements.

To see all the principal sites and also have downtime, it was apparent the trip needed to be 30 days, and even then we had to eliminate the far north and east.

My husband, Jerry, and I took the trip Feb. 10-March 12,...

I read Bruce Berger’s account of his misfortune with the mandatory road-tax stickers that tripped him up in Switzerland and, in a costly manner, in Slovenia (Sept. ’15, pg. 13).

Allow me to point out that a number of countries in Europe, among them Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland (and, soon, Germany), each have independently instituted prepaid road-tax stickers, commonly called vignettes, which are mandatory for travel on fast highways (“Schnellstrassen” in German) and expressways (Autobahnen) in most of these countries and on...

As an experienced traveler, I was taken aback by several, albeit minor, challenges when using Brussels’ Metro (subway) during a November 2014 visit. My wife and I were expecting a metro system as simple to use as that in Paris, but that was not the case.

In my line of work, using OE (operational experience) is an important tool with which to communicate lessons learned in order to avoid future mistakes and problems. Consider this article OE for travelers using the Brussels Metro.

To be fair, the Brussels Metro is very good. It’s certainly popular; carriages...

Selwyn Davidowitz, who owns I Love Cape Town (4 Ostende, 296 Beach Rd., Sea Point, 8005, South Africa; phone +27 [0] 21 439 1778, www.ilovecapetown.com… or, in the U.S., phone 310/601-8531), guides small-group tours only on the Garden Route of South Africa and in the Cape Town region. His love for his country is infectious.

We toured the Garden Route with Selwyn for one week in November ’07. At the very beginning he reminded us that his tour was all-inclusive (even laundry and room service). We were to keep our wallets in our pockets, and he did not accept tips. We stayed at 4-star...

My wife, Jackie, and I, along with another couple, took a 10-day bus tour of Ireland in early September 2014 with CIE Tours (US office in Morristown, NJ; 800/243-8687, www.cietours.com). It was fantastic!

We booked the trip through Bethany Travel (Millsboro, DE; 800/806-8747, www.dreamvacationinc.com). I don’t recall the total cost.

As a wheelchair user for 47 years and a paraplegic, I’ve found that overseas travel can provide obstacles and challenges.

Our tour of Ireland was made somewhat easier by spending three nights in each of three cities/towns: Dublin, Westport...

The problem the subscriber described with TSA Pre√TM (Pre-check) in the letter “Issues with Global Entry” (Dec.’14, pg. 51) is not unique. My wife and I have been enrolled in Global Entry for several years, and for the last year or so we experienced the very same issue.

The problem first occurred during August 2013 on a trip to Europe, flying Delta Air Lines, San Diego-Atlanta-London. In San Diego there was no problem, as we were both in the first-class line, but in Atlanta we got separated, as my wife’s boarding pass did not have “Pre√” printed on it. She barely made the flight,...

In northeastern China, my wife, Meg, and I visited Harbin, Jan. 19-25, 2015, to attend the International Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival (Jan. 5-Feb. 25, 2015).

We wanted to be near the tourist attractions and close to local transportation (taxis), and on Hotels.com I found the Holiday Inn Harbin – City Centre (No. 90 Jing Wei St., Daoli District, Harbin, 150010, P.R. China; phone +86 45184226656 or, in the US, 888/465-4329, www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/harbin/hrbch/hoteldetail).

For the nights Monday through Thursday the room rate was $177.76 per night, and on...

India! Many love it, and some say they hate it, but no one is indifferent to this vast subcontinent teeming with almost one billion people. I was privileged to view it on a March-April tour with The Eagle Connection (Te Wairua, Apuau Channel, Private Bag, Havelock, Marlborough, North Island, New Zealand; phone +64 3 576 5048, fax 5148, www.eagle-tours.co.nz).

Some of my impressions — a kaleidoscope of color that swirled and shifted endlessly; people, cows and vehicles pressing in closely, and pilgrims who chanted, turned prayer wheels and elbowed past us to present gifts to...
