Llamas in Sajama National Park, Bolivia.

From December 2017 into January 2018, my wife, Susan, and I completed our second circumnavigation of the world, purchasing flights through American Airlines, part of the oneworld alliance of airlines.

Making plans

Creating and pricing an itinerary was easy using oneworld's Explorer website (rtw.oneworld.com).The website spelled out some rules for choosing flights, and as I picked destinations, the site notified me if I violated a rule.

After selecting our destinations, I chose dates and flights based on my initial expectation of the number of days we planned to...

Cape Willoughby Lightstation, on the east coast of Kangaroo Island.

Kangaroo Island lies just south of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. The island is 93 miles wide (east to west) and 35 miles from north to south, and it can be reached by car ferry (from Cape Jervis, on the mainland) or by air (from Adelaide and, from mid-December to the end of January, from Melbourne).

I lived in Sydney in the '70s and part of the '80s, and since that time I've known about Kangaroo Island (KI). Whenever it came up in conversation or I read about it, the island was characterized as a wildlife refuge or a national park, and it does contain areas...

Mt. Ararat, as seen from near the Etchmiadzin Cathedral in Armenia.

I had been to Armenia and Georgia in 1974, when they were still part of the USSR, and when I met some fellow dermatologists from both countries at a recent meeting held in San Diego and they were kind enough to invite me to visit them, I declared the Caucasus to be my May 2018 travel destination.

Zulya Rajabova, President of Silk Road Treasure Tours, had arranged a superb trip to Uzbekistan for my wife, Yuki, and me, so she seemed the right person to call to plan this upcoming trip. She said, "Leave everything to me!" and soon sent us an initial detailed plan for review. (...

Enormous carved walls and the doorless entrance dwarf visitors to the Temple of Horus at Edfu.

Following a 2018 overland tour with Amazing Global Travel to see the ancient sites in and around Cairo (Nov. '18, pg. 6), Debi's journey continues with a cruise along the Nile.

I arrived in Aswan from Cairo early in the morning, and, once I was checked into my cabin aboard the Sonesta St. George 1, I departed with my new guide, Mahmoud Aly, on a felucca ride to the Aswan Botanical Garden, located on a small island off the eastern bank of the Nile.

Originally inhabited by Lord Kitchener in 1898, when he was commander of the Egyptian army, this nearly 17-acre island was...

Dating from 2520 BC, the Khafre pyramid, one of three main pyramids at Giza, is the second-largest in this complex, reaching a height of 470 feet.

There are few things that make me emotional. I didn't expect one of them to be Egypt.

For me, Egypt was one of those legendary places filled with ancient biblical history and incredible monuments that have literally stood the test of time. When Amazing Global Travel presented an opportunity to visit, there was no hesitation in my response.

Jumping right in

I arrived at one of the most populated cities in the world at 1:30 a.m. on July 11, 2018, and, thankfully, a rep was waiting to greet me with my visa, ushering me through Immigration and Customs and to my...

A spice vendor in the market in Marrakech.

In May 2018, I joined nine other travelers, along with our tour leader (and professional photographer), Daniel, our local guide, Ali, and our driver, Abdul, on a photography tour of Morocco.

What sets a photography tour apart from a regular tour? Being given the opportunity to rise before dawn to capture the sunrise; setting up tripods during the "blue hour" after sunset, and getting up in the middle of the night to photograph the Milky Way, among other things.

Although not everyone in our group was an avid photographer, we all enjoyed the fact that our guide, Ali...

The Gehry-designed Fondation Louis-Vuitton.

On my seventh trip to Paris with friends in April 2018, I realized that I seldom ventured outside the central core of the city, always sticking close to the Seine. In fact, I can recall only one time, on my last trip to Paris, 10 years ago, when I made a worthwhile journey to Père-Lachaise Cemetery in the 20th Arrondissement, aided by the self-tour itinerary in Rick Steves’ Paris guidebook.

City layout

Paris is divided into 20 districts, or arrondissements, numbered in a clockwise spiral. Most visitors are familiar with the 1st through 7th arrondissements. The first...

Our parking space in the shadow of The Watchtower, a large volcanic mesa on James Ross Island.

One place I had never considered visiting was Antarctica. It always seemed too far away from my world, more of an idea than a location. But when ITN received a press release from Oceanwide Expeditions (US office in Houston, TX; 800/453-7245, oceanwide-expeditions.com) announcing discounted Antarctic cruises for members of the press (airfare not included), the allure of the distant continent was too much to resist.

The trip I found most to my liking was the roughly 2-week “Weddell Sea — In Search of the Emperor Penguin” cruise, Nov. 14-26, 2017. While several...
