TripAdvisor and animal welfare

This item appears on page 4 of the November 2019 issue.

In October 2016, TripAdvisor (www.tripadvisor.com) and its subsidiary, Viator (www.viator.com), stopped selling tickets to animal experiences in which travelers interact directly with wild animals, such as elephant riding, walking with lions, etc., as part of an animal-welfare initiative (Dec. ’17, pg. 54).

On Oct. 2, 2019, TripAdvisor expanded its animal-welfare initiative by announcing that, worldwide, the company will no longer sell tickets to parks or aquariums that breed or buy whales or dolphins. Tickets to whale- or dolphin-rehabilitation centers that offer public activities and viewing will still be available to purchase on those sites.
