Tasmania art museum

At the Southern Hemisphere’s largest private-collection museum, The Museum of Old & New Art, or MONA (655 Main Rd., Berriedale, Hobart, Tasmania 7011, Australia; phone +61 3 6277 9900, mona.net.au), works of antiquity can be viewed side by side with modern art. The esoteric building, itself, is a work of art, with most of the exhibit space underground.

In addition to the rotating display of the more than 1,900 works of art in the collection, the MONA has temporary exhibits. Visitors each receive an O, a smartphone-like object that guides them through the museum and provides audio commentary, videos, etc. Or a free O smartphone app can be downloaded.

Open daily; hours vary by season. AUD30 (near $21), adult/child, or AUD27, senior. A private catamaran ferry, the MR-1, shuttles visitors from Brooke Street Pier in Hobart to the museum, leaving roughly once an hour, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., for AUD22 round trip.
