Sleep by animals in Canberra zoo

This item appears on page 45 of the August 2019 issue.

In Canberra, southeastern Australia, the chance to sleep beside wild animal enclosures on the grounds of the National Zoo & Aquarium is given to overnight guests at the Jamala Wildlife Lodge (999 Lady Denman Dr., Canberra; phone +61 2 6287 8444, www.jamalawildlifelodge.com.au), located at the zoo.

Each of the luxurious “jungle bungalows” has floor-to-ceiling windows providing 24-hour views of either lions, tigers, sun bears or cheetahs.

For a visit from 1:30 p.m. to 11 a.m., including tours, dinner and breakfast, a bungalow for up to four people costs AUD2,275 (near $1,595) per night. The type of animal adjacent to the lodge cannot be chosen ahead of time. Due to animal behavior issues, there are restrictions on children of certain ages.
