In Queensland, northeastern Australia, visitors can ride a restored steam train with Mary Valley Rattler (Historic Gympie Station, Tozer St., Gympie; phone +61 07 5482 2750, www.maryvalleyrattler.com.au).

For each run, the travel time between the towns of Gympie and Aramoor is one hour, and after an hour’s stay the train completes the round trip. Aboard the steam train, round trips of the “Classic Rattler Run” are made each Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, leaving at 9 a.m and returning at 12 p.m., then running again 1:30-4:30. On a restored, 1920s-era electric train, the “Rattler Picnic Run” is made on Thursday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Each run costs AUD59 (near $41), adult; AUD49, senior, or AUD30, child 4-12. A VIP Club Car seat costs AUD110 (“Classic Run” only, and it must be booked ahead). On the “Picnic Run,” a picnic basket is available for AUD25 per person.
