Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall in the southern Philippines on Sept. 15, leaving more than 80 people dead, most in landslides. The worst-hit area was in the town of Itogon, Benguet Province, where a landslide destroyed a shelter holding miners and their families, killing at least 32 people.

On Sept. 20, at least 21 people in Cebu province were killed in another landslide that occurred after the main portion of the typhoon had passed. Though Cebu had not been directly hit by the typhoon, the increase in rain caused the hillside, where people had constructed makeshift homes, to collapse.

Mangkhut then moved to China, where it left at least 200 people injured. More than 2.5 million people were evacuated from the provinces of Guangdong and Hainan. In Hong Kong, high winds and flooding caused power outages and the temporary cancellation of all flights and trains into and out of the city.
