Treaty signed in Colombia

This item appears on page 19 of the August 2016 issue.

After more than three years of negotiations, the government of Colombia and FARC, a militant communist rebel group considered a terrorist organization by the US, signed a cease-fire on June 24, ending 50 years of civil war. The cease-fire precedes an actual peace accord, which at press time was anticipated to be finalized and signed in late July. It is estimated that more than 200,000 people have been killed in Colombia’s war with FARC.
