Rocket attacks in Israel

This item appears on page 17 of the October 2016 issue.

Rockets and artillery fired from Gaza into Israel on Aug. 22 fell near a house in the city of Sderot, doing no damage, and damaged a water tower in the town of Beit Hanoun. No injuries were reported in either incident. After the attacks, Israel responded with artillery and air strikes, targeting sites in Gaza belonging to the militant Palestinian group Hamas. Two people were injured.

The US Department of State warns that, though Israel and Hamas continue to observe the temporary cease-fire that ended the Gaza conflict in 2014, sporadic mortar or rocket fire and corresponding Israeli military responses continue to occur. The border of Israel and Gaza is rarely open and is never open for tourism.

The US Department of State also warns that in Israel and the West Bank, the security situation remains complex and can change quickly. Travelers should be cautious when traveling to areas of heightened tension.
