Tiananmen Square museum, HK

In Hong Kong, the first museum dedicated entirely to the June 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, China, the June 4 Memorial Museum (5/F Foo Hoo Centre, 3 Austin Ave., Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, P.R. China; phone +852 2459 6489, http://64museum.blogspot.hk [in Chinese only]), opened in April 2014.

In June 1989, Chinese authorities sent armed soldiers and tanks to break up protests that had been peacefully held in the square by students since April. Chinese military attacked the protesters and their sympathizers June 3-5. Death counts are not known; estimates run 200 to 6,000. Accounts of the protests are censored in mainland China. 

The museum shows photos, reports and artifacts from the protests and sells USB drives with documents. Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon., Wed.-Fri. and 10-7 Sat., Sun. and holidays. $10 adult, $5 senior and disabled.
