The market was crowded with people shopping for the traditional feast marking Eid al-Fitr, the day after the last day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan (in 2015, June 18-July 16).

On July 17, two suicide bombers, one reportedly a 10-year-old girl, targeted a prayer gathering in the town of Damaturu, killing at least nine people.
