Wednesday’s fares

By Ken Sherman
This item appears on page 50 of the August 2015 issue.

I read the item about Sunday being the best day of the week on which to buy a domestic airline ticket most cheaply (June ’15, pg. 58).

I go to California at least four times a year to see my kids, traveling round trip between Newark, New Jersey (EWR), and Los Angeles (LAX) using United Airlines. I have consistently found Wednesdays to be the best day to buy a ticket at the lowest price.

In the previous issue, I read that the best time to buy a domestic airline ticket most cheaply is about 47 days in advance of the flight (May ’15, pg. 2), or about seven weeks early. For my May 22-27, 2015, trip I wasn’t in a position to buy the tickets that soon, so I booked five weeks in advance instead. I had to pay $40 more per ticket, but Wednesday was still the best day.

(I would point out to potential subscribers to ITN that one tip like either of those above could easily pay for a year’s subscription.)
