For part of a trip to Southeast Asia, our travel agent arranged for my wife, Pnina, and me to have, in Cambodia, an independent tour guide: Sopheap Bung (16D, St. 2003, Phum Chamka Ouloeuk, Sangkat Kakap, Khan Pau Senchey, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; phone 85512894155 or 855978828155 or email bpheap@hotmail.com or bpheap@yahoo.com).

Every day of our visit, Jan. 18-22, 2013, Sopheap arrived with an air-conditioned car, with driver, at about 8 a.m. and returned us to the hotel between 4 and 6 p.m. We visited sites in and near Phnom Penh, Udong (Oudong) Mountain and Battambang as well as, along the way, Siem Reap.

Sopheap spoke English well and was prompt, knowledgeable, polite and caring. He had a gentle demeanor which was very appealing. I think other visitors would be fortunate to secure his services.

ITN asked Sopheap Bung for his rates, and he wrote, “I provide English-speaking tour guide service in Phnom Penh and within Cambodia. In Phnom Penh I charge $30 per day (up to nine hours) for a small group (less than 10 people) and $40 per day for a big group (10 people or more). Tours to provinces or attractions away from Phnom Penh are $50 per day for a small group and $60 per day for a big group.

“I can also arrange for tours, hotel reservations, meals and transportation. Within Phnom Penh, a 4-seat car costs $50 per day. These rates include driver, gasoline, taxes and meal for driver.”
