Sunrock Guest House in Johannesburg

En route to any of a dozen destinations in Africa, chances are you’ll need a layover in Johannesburg. For years I’ve used the deluxe airport hotels for convenience, that is, until I discovered Sunrock Guest House (11 Park St., Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa; phone +27 11 394 3772, fax 088 011 394 3772).

In May ’13, after a 17-hour nonstop flight, I exited baggage claim at O.R. Tambo International and found the driver from the Sunrock holding a sign with my name. In 10 minutes I was in the lobby of the guest house being greeted by two friendly dogs and a macaw named Buddy. I felt as if I were staying at someone’s home.

Sunrock, set in gardens around a pool, is in the quiet neighborhood of Kempton Park. The 3-star property has a library of books, home-cooked meals and a good wine selection.

My single room cost $59 for one night (rooms run ZAR420-ZAR850, or near $41-$84). It included airport transfers, a full breakfast and free WiFi. It was the best value and friendliest staff (ask for Ina) I’ve encountered in Jo’burg.
