Problems in Niger

In Niger on May 23, terrorists using suicide car bombs attacked a Nigerien military compound in Agadez and a uranium mining facility operated by a French company in Arlit. Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb continues its threats to kidnap Westerners in Niger.

At press time, Niger’s entire river region, including the cities of Niamey, Dosso and Tillaberry, was experiencing electricity shortages because of damage to a major power line. Consequently, most of Niamey’s residential neighborhoods had intermittent water supply. A permanent solution was not expected for weeks or months.
