In order to take in the annual sing-sing held at Mount Hagen, my husband, Maurice, and I joined a tour of Papua New Guinea with ElderTreks (Toronto, ON, Canada; 800/741-7956 or 416/588-5000), Aug. 9-29, 2012.

The tour price was $9,995 per person. Airfare, which involved multiple flights and for which we booked business-class seats so we could get horizontal and have a decent night’s sleep, ended up at $11,888 per person — not cheap, but we considered this as the most amazing trip we shall ever take in our lifetimes.

The sing-sing and the tour, overall, were a photographer’s dream. Riding on the Sepik River in a dugout canoe, encountering life in the villages, experiencing the incredible birds and discovering the highly talented woodcarvers all were major highlights.

Our guide, Nitin Dhami, was exemplary and enthused as he passed along his wealth of knowledge. We highly recommend this trip and Nitin.
