Health officials in Venezuela reported on June 8 that the number of cases of H1N1 influenza there had risen to 1,538, concentrated primarily in the coastal and western states of Mérida, Táchira, Caracas, Zulia, Miranda and Lara.

While the World Health Organization reported normal influenza rates for most South American countries for that time of year, it stated that the rate was at an epidemic threshold in Venezuela.

In response, Ecuador was questioning arriving visitors regarding symptoms.
