Synagogue in Tunisia

This item appears on page 52 of the September 2012 issue.

In his August 2012 column, Philip Wagenaar stated that El Ghriba Synagogue on Djerba Island in Tunisia was destroyed by a bomb attack in 2002. This is inaccurate.

We visited it in 2009 and were told that the tourists and Tunisian guides had been killed in the adjacent parking lot by the explosives-laden truck. On the Web, only one source reported that there was any damage to the synagogue, and it was only to a small part of it.

The synagogue is beautiful and well worth a visit.
