Vienna and Salzburg dining

This item appears on page 30 of the April 2011 issue.

While in Austria in September ’10, my wife, Judy, and I dined at three restaurants that we can recommend.

In VIENNA, we had an excellent dinner at Café Restaurant Zum Neuen Blumenstock (Ballgasse 6, 1010 Wien; phone +43 676 5345041), off Kartnerstrasse near Stephansplatz. We dined outside and had the special of the day, an excellent Wiener schnitzel with pommes frites for €9.90 (near $13.50) each. Judy also had a large mixed salad (€9.20). This plus two glasses of wine and one large beer totaled €47.80 ($66).

We had two favorite restaurants in SALZBURG. Hotel-Restaurant Gablerbräu (Linzergasse 9, A-5020 Salzburg; phone +43 662 88965), in the Neustadt (New Town), is nearly 600 years old. The building was the birthplace, in 1877, of world-renowned signer Richard Mayr. In the Gablerbrau Stübe, our wonderful lunch of schnitzel and chicken salad plus beer and wine for two cost €22.40.

Sternbräu Gourmet World (Sternbräu GmbH, Griesgasse 23-25, 5020 Salzburg; phone ++43 [0] 662 842140), on the main shopping street in the heart of Altstadt (Old Town), has five restaurants and 12 “tradition rooms” (can be reserved for events), with the right atmosphere to accommodate every guest.

Sternbräu offers international specialties plus local dishes and has two outside gardens for dining under the chestnut trees. (Main dishes from €10.50 [$14.50] for goulash with dumplings to €16.50 for rump steak with potatoes and green beans.)
