Macau restaurant

We were in Hong Kong in November ’03 and took a day trip on the ferry to the former Portuguese colony of Macau. The ferry ride took just under an hour. After several hours of sightseeing in this unusual area, we got hungry and our guide dropped us off at Henri’s Galley (4 Av. Da Republica, Macau; phone [853] 556251 or visit www.henrisgalley.com.mo). It is located on the old waterfront and has a nautical theme. Seafood is a specialty along with a wide variety of Portuguese and Asian dishes.

The four of us had grilled fillet of sole. It was terrific! The portions were very generous. The sole was very fresh and I would guess that all of their seafood is prepared the day it is brought in. Soups and salads are available as well. Save some room for the house specialty dessert of mango pudding. It is as smooth and good-tasting as you will find anywhere. The meal for four, including two bottles of good Portuguese wine, cost HK$600 (about US$77).

The proprietor is Henri Wong, and the place has been in business since 1976. The day we were there, Henri’s son, Raymond, was in charge. He took very good care of us and was gracious and funny. He speaks flawless English as the result of living 10 years in Calgary.
