Italy’s highest court of appeal upheld a 16-year jail sentence for the captain of the cruise ship Costa Concordia on May 12. The captain, Francesco Schettino, navigated the ship into a submerged rock off of the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012 reportedly while trying to impress a woman in the wheelhouse. The vessel capsized and 32 people were killed. Schettino was convicted of both manslaughter and abandoning ship in 2015. 

After being closed for 60 years due to disrepair, in summer 2015 a 2-mile-long cliff-face walkway on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route in County Antrim reopened to the public.

Garbage workers throughout Greece began a strike on June 19, one which was ongoing as of press time, causing piles of garbage to build up on the streets of major cities. Workers were striking due to fears that austerity measures could cause up to 10,000 of them to lose their jobs at the end of their contract period.
