As of Aug. 1, travelers from the US, Canada and UK, among others, are eligible for free visas upon arrival in Sri Lanka. The offer is scheduled to end on Jan. 1, 2020.

The country of Laos began offering evisas to travelers from 180 countries, including the US, Canada and the UK, on July 9. The single-entry evisa allows a visitor to stay in Laos for up to 30 days.

As of July 20, visitors to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, can legally purchase alcohol for personal consumption at any Maritime & Mercantile International, or MMI (www.mmidubai.com), outlet in the emirate. The city of Aalborg, in northern Denmark, is now allowing only one cruise ship to dock at a time at the country’s only inland cruise port, despite its being able to accommodate multiple ships of 800 feet in length at once. The number of cruise passengers visiting Aalborg had risen from 1,000 in 2014 to 40,000 in 2018.

Egypt’s Bent Pyramid, built for the pharaoh Sneferu around 2600 BC, opened to visitors on July 13. It is the oldest pyramid in the Dahshur necropolis, which is near the pyramids at Giza. Its unusual bent shape is the result of builders having to change the angle of the pyramid to compensate for the unstable ground on which it was being constructed.

Also opened is a neighboring, 60-foot-tall pyramid that may have been built for Sneferu’s wife.
